Anti-Racing Fanatics Activities Against Greyhounds

By Dennis McKeon

ANTI-RACERS DON'T WANT TO SHARE SPACE WITH RETIRED RACING GREYHOUND SERVICE DOGS

PROTECTING GREYHOUNDS
.
Karl & Hero @ Hob Nob
FROM the FAKE GREYHOUND PROTECTORS---VOTE NO on 13.

For those of you who missed it, it is important for you to know that the anti-racing contingent at the recent Seminole County Hob Nob, tried to have the retired racing greyhounds who were there, removed from the premises.
.
These particular retired racing greyhounds, just so happened to be specially trained Service Dogs, who are trained, among other things, to be of service and comfort to our armed forces Veterans..

Those Veterans are the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line, so that even the most ignorant, greyhound-averse, propaganda-spreading ideologues, are able to have a say-so in a concept as foreign to them as the welfare of an entire population of greyhounds.
.
Fortunately, security at the event realized that removing those retired racing greyhound Service Dogs would have been a violation of law, and they declined to do so.
.
Apparently, these beautifully-mannered and noble greyhounds, were attracting quite a bit more attention, and their perfect deportment was flying in the face of the "greyhound racing is cruel and abusive" propaganda that the anti-racers were hoping to promote. So, like spoiled little children, they threw a tantrum, rather than embracing and welcoming these magnificent greyhounds they claim to be "protecting".

Trying To Reason with Hurricane Season

By Dennis McKeon

This is the time of year that I usually begin to check the Weather Underground “severe weather” reports. I don’t like hurricanes. They knock over trees. I like trees. Just not on, nor through the roof of the house.
So my first of many yearly excursions to that estimable web page, brought to mind the hurricane of 2017, called Irma. It posed a clear and present danger to the state of Florida (among others). There was a great deal of concern not only for the residents of Florida, but for the estimated 8-10,000 actively racing greyhounds who live and race there.
In hindsight, it is interesting to note, that the same people who call themselves “greyhound protectors”, and who are politically active today, in attempting to ban greyhound racing in Florida, thereby disenfranchising many of those 8-10,000 greyhounds, had an equally curious strategy, then, to “protect” those greyhounds.
As Florida residents undertook a mass exodus of their state, gridlocking highways and emptying gas stations up and down the isthmus, the self-styled experts behind today’s “Committee to Protect Dogs”, were demanding that the greyhounds of Florida join the insanity.
Insisting that the kennels at the various racetracks were not built well enough to withstand the force of a Category 4 hurricane, they were trumpeting all over the media, that Florida’s racing greyhounds should be evacuated, 10-12 at a time, if need be, to who knows where. And that it was the height of unconcern for Florida's racing professionals not to do so at once.
24 Hrs Post Irma
Naturally, people who actually understand and know how to care for large colonies of greyhounds, were virtually dumbstruck by the pure absurdity of such an impracticable and dangerous suggestion, which, when amplified incessantly by the media, became a more of a taunt.
Fortunately, Florida’s greyhound racing professionals did not panic, and as greyhound racing professionals always have done, they chose to ride out the storm, and to stay in the kennels with their greyhounds. Because that’s what real greyhound protectors do. They place the greyhounds first. Not their agenda, and not their personal safety.
And not a single greyhound, nor their attendant trainers or kennel owners in the state of Florida, was harmed by the considerable rage of Hurricane Irma---despite the dire warnings and taunts of those self-styled experts, who are now the braintrust of ‘The Committee To Protect Dogs”.
Courtesy of the Committee to Protect Dogs. this year’s brainstorm of “greyhound protection”, for those of you who aren’t aware, is to ban greyhound racing in Florida, via a Constitutional Amendment, to be voted on by the public. Demonstrating once again, that “fake greyhound protectors”, should be feared more by greyhounds, than Armageddon hurricanes. Or by the prospect of thousands of Florida’s greyhounds having to be re-homed by independent adoption groups, without any contingency plan built into the proposed legislation.
Meanwhile, the “greyhound protectors”, or the Committee to Protect Dogs, or whatever counter-intuitive name they are calling themselves by then, will ride off into the sunset, as they always have, without a care or concern in the world for any of that.
Just like Hurricane Irma did.

Block & Delete, the Grey2K & AR (animal rights) Way

Much ado has been made about this blog not publishing ANONYMOUS comments. We do that because we believe people should not be able to hide behind ANONYMOUS, that they should have enough courage of their convictions to post a name.  If someone posts their name, they get published. However, courageous people who post on the Grey2K FaceBook page or the Grey2K blog, don't get that much consideration.  What happens is that Grey2K immediately deletes the post and blocks the person.  Grey2K gets rid of people who question them and their comments; those who seek clarification or who want to clarify and provide a counterpoint to a statement.

Here are some FaceBook comments on the Grey2K policy to delete & block.

Erin Walker: LOL. They just blocked me,  can no longer comment on their site. I wasn't even that nasty either!! Someone had commented on one of their posts asking where they could get a greyhound, Grey2K responded with their adoption referral I looked and noticed that a lot of states weren't even represented in their list. (according to their list I couldn't even adopt in my state) So I asked why they offered so few adoption groups as options? Do you get kick backs from these groups? I said that there were tons of groups they could adopt from and probably some in their area, I gave a few options, and said they could google adoption groups in their area, and said that you can even adopt from the tracks...Wonder which part they didn't like...
January 27

Kevin Muckleroy:  I just got blocked because of a post I put on Grey2k. To tell you how bad they lie, they were at my home track yesterday for the matinee. Christine took pictures of the parking lot from over 1/4 mile away saying that the parking lot was empty. Wrong!! Then the she posted a picture from the empty seats on the first floor pointing out all of the empty seats. Well of course they were empty. It was two hours before post time! The attendance for Wednesday's matinee was over 500. Where were the pictures of the packed club house? Just another way for these idiots to deprive the public of the truth. Thursday night had an attendance of over 1000. I don't believe that we will be closing the doors anytime soon as they advertised. What Burns me up? If you're going to fight, fight fair!! Don't continue to lie to gain support. If you want to debate a subject, then debate it. Don't delete the other side because you are too chicken shit to hear the truth!!
March 14

Melony Cleveland: Awesome, I made 2 comments on Grey2K USA's wall and got myself blocked and had my comments removed!
July 2

Delete & block is SOP (standard operating procedure) for not only Grey2K, but pretty much ALL animal rights zealot groups & forums. After all, they like keeping their minions dumb & miserable. Think about it, do you believe they would get 1/2 of the donations they get if people were informed as to the truth of situations?

In May, Lyman High School (mascot is the Greyhound) used to hold an event at Sanford Orlando Kennel Club. The event was not held during racing hours and it raised money for greyhound adoption groups. That was the SOLE purpose for the event.  So, this year, Animal Rights of Florida (ARFF) and other AR groups, put untold pressure on the school district and board. They got the event cancelled.

Lyman HS Greyhound vs Racing Greyhound

It's a shame that the school district caved in to the pressure from the AR zealots. What a shame for the kids of Lyman High School but, most especially, this really hurts the adoptable Greyhounds that benefited from the funds raised.

Here is a wonderful photo essay on last year's event on the Orlando Sentinel.

Since there is no gambling involved and no greyhound racing, we can safely surmise that this action was purely to make the adoptable dogs do without. Once again the ARs prove they really don't care a plugged nickle about the dogs. The haters just keep on hating and the domestic terrorists win.  And, believe me, the anti's are gloating.

A victory for Greyhounds?  I think not.  They are the ones that lost this one...  lost adoption funds...  lost opportunities for people to meet & adopt dogs...  and probably lost homes.  Where is the concern for the dogs?

Some were quite upset at this turn of events and contacted ARFF.  As usual, comments were deleted and the person commenting was blocked.

Brandi's comment was not nasty or unkind. It just pointed out that the only thing accomplished by their action in getting the event cancelled was to take needed adoption funds away from the groups that work day in & out with the dogs.  The groups that provide direct care and support.

Another supporter of the event, Aimee, contacted them too.

Her comment, pointed out the loss of much needed funds and asked ARFF if they were going to replace that much needed money.  She pointed out how short sighted they were and how selfish.
Her comment was also deleted.

And Ellen's comment didn't last long at all, being taken down within minutes of being posted.

In the past, this event has garnered anywhere from $500 to $1300 in donations for adoption groups and Sanford Orlando Kennel Club added money to it. Sanford Orlando dollars were 100% matching, adoption groups have been denied anywhere between $1000 and $2600, maybe more.  That's a lot of dog food.

So, in response to the criticism and comments about lost adoption funds, Animal Rights Florida posted,
"... We provided Lyman with over 100 fundraising ideas for high school students, so they could continue to help rescued greyhounds."
C'mon ARFF...  why don't you, Grey2K, and HSUS cough up the $2600 that you denied the dogs.? Rather than offering platitudes, offer something substantial and beneficial.

Lie & Deny; Delete & Block....  It's all SOP for them regardless of who or what gets hurt.

Screenshot Proof of deleted comments
You just gotta love the ARs and GREY2K. Such accepting, considerate, and respectful people. The best of the best of humankind! My very first ever comment on one of their last posts not only went unanswered, but was deleted. I also can no longer comment on their posts/page. Really great people there...if you're one of their zombies!

They don't want people to ask questions because the answers, if they are answered truthfully, can only hurt their agenda. They want people who'll follow blindly, parrot their words and who can't be bothered to find out the truth for themselves. It's difficult to make people change their minds once they've chosen sides because they don't want to feel stupid for choosing the wrong side in the first place.

The pro racing community on the other hand, has shown only acceptance, respect, and a desire to TEACH the truth.

Skinny Dog Design...

Yep....  that's right....

An old time greyhound man, Jerry Heine, passed some time back.  According to all accounts, Mr. Heine was a dog man's dog man and his charges were much loved and always, without exception, came first. He and his family were certainly not deserving of nasty, uncivilized, and indecent vile comments on his obituary such as those posted by "Pet Jewelry by Skinny Dog Design", specifically, Scott Janiak-Ross and/or his wife, Jennifer Janiak-Ross. For what it's worth, they should be boycotted by all for the hatred and general lack of decency they have shown to the deceased.

Their comments have brought out a lot of strong feelings on both sides, and a lot of outrage. The nastiness was apparently posted without regard for the grief of the man's friends and family, who shouldn't have been burdened with such comments. Some people seem to have forgotten what they were taught in kindergarten and lost their manners as well. But, every cloud has a silver lining. This is a perfect moment for those politically self-identified as anti-racing to prove that it really is all about the dogs and come out and openly condemn such hate and personal attacks which serve only to tarnish their credibility and do much harm and no good.

What they said, in part, was:
"What I posted on some old greyhound trainers Obit was "I'm sure there is a special place in hell for him" and I certainly did not say I "hope" he is burning in hell or "wished" him to go to hell or anything like that. I did not wish harm on him or his family. Simply said if your cruel to animals you probably are going to hell if there is such a place. "

CoCo Neon Woody Jeremiah Really.... I think this is a respect thing if you are against greyhound racing then fine but I do believe in respect and morals and I don't think the comment made by you was nice at all. It don't matter if I am pro or anti greyhound racing I have RESPECT and would never post such awful words on anyone's obituary page. Let's find some morals and respect for dead or living. This world would be a much better place. And I am sure your parents raised you better than that.

For those who may feel the need to support this blowhard, who on God's green earth would disrespect another man on his obituary announcement?  The only kind of person I can think of is a loser.  Common decency dictates that one, no matter your political stand on something, show respect for the dead. That is not done by posting you hope they burn in hell on their family's online obituary.  The comments from Skinny Dog Design WAS ON A MANS OBITUARY.  Are you that incredibly dense and obtuse to where you don't see how wrong that is?

Skinny Dog Design posted in return that, "This is NOT a business. All jewelry we create is used to raise funds for sight hound rescues we make zero profit on items sold . We have our own careers that have nothing to do with greyhounds or animal jewelry. We work in the film industry."

Really?  The question remains, are you that obtuse & dense to know what you did is wrong?  Are you that self absorbed that you refuse to offer an apology for your actions?  Below is an excerpt of some of the conversation of those "holier than thou" people who disgraced themselves and others by their indecent actions. The comments show that they are a class act --- NOT!

PeTA & Grey2K

I'm sure ya'll remember the Grey2K video of the kennel at Tucson Greyhound Park (TGP)? You know which one...  the one that was taken in the dark at one of the kennels...  the one where the 'videographers' told the watchman to not turn on the lights because the cameras worked better in the dark?  That video was so "scandalous"...  After all, the greyhounds had beds, in which they were laying, and were in the dark - at night - so they could sleep!  How dare the Grey2K goons disturb their good night's sleep!

Anyway, some of those "abused" greyhounds from Tucson have gone into adoption.  Those dogs have been making the rounds and they are beautiful! One, Tonic, is a lovely boy and he came from the very kennel that they filmed.  I have come to know Tonic and I can pretty much assert that he was sleeping in his condo when the goons came in with their flashlights to film their epic contribution to the film world. Tell me, if things are so horrible for the dogs and they have been so abused, why is this boy one of the happiest dudes anyone has ever seen?  Why is he so generous with his kisses and why does he have such a giant greyhound smile?  Tell me...  please tell me...  this is something I really, really do not understand....  Would a dog which has been beaten and abused, as asserted through the years by Grey2K and its minions, would a greyhound that has, in general, been grossly mistreated be this friendly?   Uhm... not only NO, but HELL NO!  I'd expect the dog to run as if his tail is on fire at the sight of a human!

You know, I always get comments on how friendly, calm & peaceable my dogs are. All of them have always been Momma's "kids" but the girls are the most confident and outgoing dogs I have ever seen and that includes peoples' much loved pets, show dogs, all of them.... The girls really like to work the crowds. I'd hate to see how the average Joe treats their dogs if these dogs are abused. Why?  Because, you simply don't get temperament like this by poor and abusive handling.

This is something that I've been preaching ever since before Grey2K came out with this stupid video. The only thing that that "investigative team" did was narrate the video in such a way as to make it sound bad. You know, a couple of amateurs with a video camera does not make an investigative team. However, that is the Grey2K tactic learned from her PeTA mentor, Ingrid Newkirk.

PeTA is known for using such tactics. Back in 1994, PeTA hired Michele Rokke (founder of Animal Protection New Mexico) as an “investigator.”  Here's a for instance...

Between June 1996 & April 1997, Rokke was in the employ of Howard Baker, DVM in New Jersey and conducting an undercover PeTA "investigation."  Two months after her employment ended, June 1997, Rokke filed charges against and accused Baker of 16 counts of animal cruelty, beginning with a dog that was treated at the clinic two days after she started her job in June 1996 and ending with a dog seen by Baker in April 1997.

The case was based on the uncorroborated testimony of Rokke, who surreptitiously videotaped the doctor and shot as much as 200 hours of tape with a camera hidden in her handbag. That tape was edited to about three minutes by PeTA and sent to national media.  The edited videotape was played before and during the trial on local and national news programs, tabloid shows, and syndicated talk shows. Throughout the nearly three-year ordeal, Baker and his wife were harassed and received death threats.

Baker was convicted in lower court in July 1999 but the conviction was overturned in April 2000 on appeal. Howard Baker DVM was exonerated of all charges of cruelty by New Jersey Superior Court, and the New Jersey Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners reinstated his license to practice 12 days after the court's April 14 decision.

The appeals court ruled that:
  1. the testimony of the state's star witness was not believable;
  2. the testimony of the defendant's witnesses was believable;
  3. Baker's actions did not amount to cruelty under the law; and
  4. the connection between the witness and PeTA tainted her testimony.
This is not the only case in which this has happened. Rokke has been involved in other illegal investigations including actions against Boys Town National Research Hospital, Huntingdon Life Sciences, and a North Dakota horse ranch. There are more.

Anyone who is really into dogs knows & understands that much of dog temperament is genetic, so behavior is not really proof of anything. There are spooky dogs that have never been abused, while some dogs from truly horrific environments and conditions still wag their tails and solicit attention from every human they meet. I hate when people see a nervous or shy dog and assume it means abuse. Genetic temperament and early socialization are huge influences. Even fears of things like loud voices, raised hands, fast movements, NONE of that is "proof" of abuse.

I take my dogs, my pets, for walks.  On one such walk, with a couple of them, I was stopped by several people that we came across.  One, in particular, assumed that my shy girl was abused at the track.  She was associating it with her being beaten and "tortured".  Standard comment, "Oh you poor BABY!  You were so abused that you are TERRIFIED of people!  You POOR, POOR, THING!"  and then continuing to me, "Isn't it criminal what they do to these poor dogs at the track?"

Imagine her shock & surprise when I told her that the shy girl never raced and that I had had her the longest and that her running mate had only just retired a couple of weeks earlier. The woman did not know how to respond.  It blew their race track trauma theory right out of the water. I told her, "The dogs just have different personalities... that's all."

Anyway, if you take nothing away from most of this post, I would hope you'd think about this...

  1. Grey2K USA and its founders are very closely aligned with PeTA & Ingrid Newkirk.
  2. PeTA and its followers are not above extreme propagandizing to achieve their goal and neither is Grey2K, up to & including editing to present an very distorted and most inaccurate representation of "the truth".  In fact, their edits are so extreme that the resulting information is as far from the truth as the earth is from the sun!
  3. Both Grey2K & PeTA are for the extermination of the working animal, the animal with a job.
  4. Both Grey2K & PeTA interchange "animal welfare" and "animal rights" descriptions, intentionally confusing the public.
  5. Grey2K & PeTA are NOT animal welfare groups.  Neither operate as shelters & both are LOBBYING groups.
  6. PeTA cares so much about animals that it kills 98% of the animals it takes into its supposed shelter in VA.
I'm sure there's more that you can take away, but this is just the beginning...

Puppy Mills?

Grey2K has sunk to a new low.  Actually, it really isn't all that new, their analogy is more "species" correct in that now, instead of comparing Greyhound farms & kennels to the notorious Nazi death camp, Auschwitz, they are saying that they are "puppy mills".  Sigh....

Anyone who has ever participated in or seen the results of a "puppy mill" (a term originally coined by HSUS & PeTA) will tell you that there is no comparison...  not even remotely.

Sovereign Lake & Sovereign Ruler - 4 month old pups
According to the National Animal Interest Association (NAIA), "The term puppy mill is a term of disparagement originally used to describe a specific kind of large, substandard breeding operation run by people with little concern for the welfare of their puppies or their breeding stock. Dogs found in these facilities were in poor health, living in filthy conditions without adequate medical care, nutrition or socialization. Such operations are the black sheep of the dog-breeding family, something the overwhelming majority of breeders abhor just as much as the general public."1

Since puppies bred & raised on greyhound farms are not subject to any of the conditions listed, why is Grey2K lying?  It's simple...  It's being done in search of those fundraising dollars.  They are out there trying to earn fundraising dollars by exploiting the public's love of animals and Greyhounds.  With Grey2K, it is ALL about the money.  It's NOT about the dogs.  That's shown by those darn pesky IRS 990 forms which they are no longer allowing to be published on our favorite site - Guidestar.com.

Socializing Puppies
It is unfortunate, but the growth of animal rights extremism, the brand which Grey2K's founders and their mentors (Ingrid Newkirk & Pete Singer) practice, has led to the expansion and application of the meaning of the term "puppy mill" to everyone who breeds dogs.  They are demonizing all who breed and it doesn't matter if they breed one litter every 10 years in their homes, or in state-of-the-art facilities, or on farms.  It doesn't matter if excellent care is provided for the dogs and those same dogs are healthy and well-adjusted.

What matters is bringing in those dollars!

You know...  they don't even see their own hypocrisy.  They vociferously complain about people "making money off the dogs" but they do not see that they also are "exploiting" the dogs for the sole purpose of making money off of them and furthering their political goal.  Which is worse?  Someone trying to make an HONEST living with their dogs by allowing the dogs to do what they love doing, what is ingrained in their genetics & being - running & chasing OR someone using them for political purposes?  For me, there is NO comparison.  Using a dog for political purposes is about as low as one can go. There is no honoring the working dog. There is no recognizing what the dog is, what the breed is about.

There is ONLY the POLITICAL GOAL & the DOLLARS.

For them and those like them, the end justifies the means, regardless of who or what suffers.

Update on Grey2K Trip to England

Ah yes... Several days back, in the post, Last of the Board Duties, I commented about Mr & Mrs Grey2K's working vacationtrip to England being timed to coincide with the "1000 Greyhounds" event.

I am happy to report that it was confirmed back on Sept 4 that Grey2K USA, in the form of President Christine Dorchak and her husband, Executive Director Carey Theil, did, in fact, put in an appearance at the "1000 Greyhounds (greyhoundworldrecord.com) event, to hand out badges (buttons) to participants!

You know, an airline ticket to London is around $1k... I wonder how much this trip is costing?

Curiosity got the best of me... So, I went on to a couple of discount travel sites including Expedia to get a guesstimate as to how much the trip may cost.  I found the cheapest total cost, per person, was to stay at a hostel. What's the difference between a hotel and a hostel?

Hotels are considered more luxurious than hostels and, therefore, more expensive. At a hotel one can have his own room and bathroom as well as maid service and other amenities. A person staying at a hotel will have his bags carried to his room, fresh towels delivered and his bed made up daily.

Hostels are generally used by younger travelers with less money to spare. Those visiting a hostel will most likely be required to share a room as well as bath and shower rooms. In the past, rooms were set up dormitory fashion, with communal showers. Nowadays, some hostels offer single rooms and bathrooms, while shared, might accommodate only one guest at a time.

Anyway....  Here is the info from Expedia as to the least expensive Airfare + Lodging  +Car package.

Somehow, I cannot envision the leadership of Grey2K, as dedicated to the welfare of greyhounds that they are, staying in a hostel, even if they are going to be touring the country. But, I'll give them the benefit of a doubt...

Even so, this is a fine use of those donations "for the dogs"....  NOT!

Of course, this is all supposition as we have no idea as to where they stayed or how their reservations were made, but you can see that this trip to England was not cheap.  It was, at a minimum, airfare alone was about $2000 for airfare alone.   What about meals?  We have no idea as to how much the final cost will be?

That $2000 would go a long way to helping a lot of greyhounds find homes, if it had been donated to an actual adoption group rather than lobbyists, who are making a living off of the dogs...  who are 'exploiting' the dogs (to use their own words) to achieve a political goal.

So, how much do you want to bet that Grey2K will have a donate comment on all their buttons, literature and swag they hand out?  It's called "Branding".  And, as long as they don't take pennies on site, then how the donations come in are fair game.  My guess is that they are not going to be political, lobby or whatever over there. They are getting tours of greyhound racing facilities and attending a novelty ENTERTAINMENT EVENT ... which is what setting a Guinness world book record really is.  All on the backs of the dogs they supposedly support. While campaigning for more money to pay for their pleasure trips.

How much do you want to bet that they are going to use the trip to scrounge up more donations back here in the States?  After all....  they will probably next want to visit Macau...  to shut down greyhound racing there.
