Grey2K, Carey Theil Help Prove Cocaine Problems Very Low in Greyhound Racing

By Dick Ciampa

Grey2K's Executive Director and co-founder Carey Theil helps prove how rare cocaine is in greyhound racing. Today, Grey2K and Carey Theil announced that they discovered 4 more cases of a greyhound testing positive for cocaine.

GREY2K USA on NPR: four more cases of greyhounds testing cocaine positive in Florida, legislature needs to phase out dog racing now (23-28 minute marks).
http://news.wfsu.org/post/capital-report-04-02-2015

We know from Grey2K's 80 page report released earlier this year that there were 16 cases of cocaine found in greyhounds during the 7-year period of January 2008 to the end of November 2014.

So in 7 years and 3 months, we have a total of 20 greyhounds that tested positive for cocaine.

Here are the drug test results from Florida for fiscal year 2008/2009. Benzoylecgonine is cocaine.

Here are the drug test results for Florida for fiscal year 2009/2010

You can see the number of samples analyzed in 2008/2009 were 54,942 and in 2010 the number of samples analyzed were 58,095. The other years weren't available online so I will estimate the number of samples analyzed real low at 40,000 per year for the remaining 5 years for a total of 200,000 for those 5 years. If you add the 200,000 to the 58,095 from 2010 and 54,942 from 2009 and you have a total of 313,037 samples analyzed for those 7 years. That was the time frame Grey2K had 16 cocaine positives for not only Florida, but Alabama also. Now for part of that time Alabama had three tracks running, Victoryland, Birmingham and Mobile. During 2011 Victoryland closed and only the other two tracks were running. We still have to add the first 3 months of 2015 so if we again go with a low number of 40,000 for the year we would add 10,000 for 1/4 of the year 2015 bringing the total number of samples analyzed for the 7 years and 3 months to 323,037.

Now with 20 positives out of 323,037 samples analyzed that give you a percentage of greyhounds testing positive at 0.00619.

The percentage of greyhounds testing positive for cocaine isn't extreme, Grey2K is.

Robert F. Kennedy once said this about extremists,
"What is objectionable, what is dangerous about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."

HELP WANTED: GREYHOUND RESCUERS

by Dennis McKeon

Ten thousand Racing Greyhounds in the State of Florida are in presently in imminent danger. This is no laughing matter. These remarkable and gentle animals, who can race at speeds up to 45mph, are currently being used as the political footballs of anti-racing activists, their media sycophants, politicians who are beholden to Casino Corporations which operate casinos with greyhound racing, and those casino-racetrack interests themselves.

Currently, there are two pending pieces of legislation in Florida, which purport to concern themselves with the safety of the Florida’s Racing Greyhounds.

One of these is called the Gaetz Bill, which would mandate the formal documentation and reporting of injuries sustained by racing greyhounds, on a case-by-case basis, to the gaming authorities, any time a greyhound sustains an injury while racing on any of Florida’s greyhound racetracks.

Pictured (l-r): Christine Dorchak, Rep. John Wood (R), Senator Maria Sachs (D), Rep. Matt Gaetz (R), and Carey Theil
The other of these bills is called The Greyhound Safety Act, and it also mandates injury reporting, just like the Gaetz Bill. However, it goes quite a bit deeper than that, to address the actual root causes of injuries.

Specifically, it requires the management of all racetracks in Florida to address the critical issues of racetrack surface maintenance, which has always been their responsibility, as the owners of the racetrack itself. It is upon these racetrack surfaces that all racing injuries occur.

The Greyhound Safety Act would require that racetrack maintenance crews and management work in concert with the University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine, to upgrade racetrack maintenance protocols, methods and standards to a level that insures maximum safety for the Greyhounds.

It would also mandate that any racetrack which has yet to do so, safeguard their electronic lures, so that they present no shock or concussion hazards to the greyhounds, in the event that a greyhound should come into contact with that machinery during a race.

Not surprisingly, most of the corporations which own the casino-racetracks, or those who own racetracks which do not feature casino gaming, are against the Greyhound Safety Act. It will cost them time, money and man-hours to conform to it. They seem to have instructed their political lackeys and media contacts to support and publicize the essentially impotent Gaetz Bill, which will do absolutely nothing to prevent greyhounds from suffering preventable injuries while racing, but will save them all a lot of hassle, money and commitment.

Ironically, the self-styled, anti-racing, “greyhound protection” groups, and the activist, greyhound “rescue” groups, have yet to step up in support of the Greyhound Safety Act. Though they have long supported injury reporting, they have essentially ignored the Greyhound Safety Act, which includes injury reporting, but adds the teeth of oversight and accountability for the condition of the racetrack itself, and the related racing equipment, to prevent injuries from occurring in the first place.

The sad truth of the matter is, that injury prevention is not on the agenda of big gaming corporations who wish to be rid of greyhound racing, so that they can devote all their resources to casino operation. Even though the only reason they were granted that uncontested sanction to conduct casino wagering was because they were already licensed to operate pari-mutuel wagering on the greyhound races.

Neither is injury prevention on the agenda of the infamous “greyhound protectors”, whose income is derived from portraying racing greyhounds as wretched objects of pity, and accepting tax-free donations to “protect” them from the alleged abuses of racing. Except, that is, when protecting them involves practical legislation designed to prevent injuries. Injuries to greyhounds, you see, and the negative publicity they generate via their media networks, tend to increase their income from donations, quite substantially. Preventing injuries to greyhounds might have prevented them from taking in millions of dollars in pity donations, while providing not one, tangible shred of hands-on, greyhound welfare services.

So we can see, as things are now, there is not one iota of incentive for either casino-racetrack management, which wishes to rid itself of the commitment they made to greyhound racing in order to get permission to operate casinos, or the “greyhound protectors", whose income rises with each and every injury to greyhounds, to want to prevent them from happening. Their friends in the media see to that, by relentlessly, and without context, sensationally reporting on these injuries, as if they occur in a vacuum, and as if there were no such thing as any significant and effective legislation, like the Greyhound Safety Act, designed to minimize them.

The Florida Greyhound Association (of breeders and owners) strongly supports the Greyhound Safety Act.

So, while the word “rescue” has become highly-charged and controversial when used to describe the at-will adoption process that services the racing greyhound, those who still fancy themselves as “rescuers” have a chance to make that a reality.

The greyhounds in Florida truly do need to be rescued--from the machinations of greedy casino corporations, phony advocacy/protection groups, corrupt politicians, and sensationalist, journalist/activists, who all benefit and whose agenda is served by neglect of the racing environment of the racing greyhound--to the point where more, not fewer injuries to greyhounds, are the endgame.

Please contact your state representatives and senators, and demand that they support the Greyhound Protection Act, co-sponsored by Representative Rader and Senator Smith. And give the word “rescue” some real credence.

An Important Message from....

This is an excerpt of an important message from the American Greyhound Council, the welfare organization for racing greyhounds here in the USA.  To read the article in its entirety, please click on the link.

Hateful Grey2K Speech Reveals Ugly Truth Behind Welfare Facade

When the National Greyhound Association (NGA) evacuated dozens of neglected greyhounds from an Arkansas farm in May and later banned its owner from greyhound racing for life, greyhound welfare advocates around the country applauded. At least, the real greyhound welfare advocates applauded. But not Carey Theil, Grey2K’s top mouthpiece.

Instead, Theil condemned NGA’s humane intervention. According to him, the NGA did everything wrong. Yet today those greyhounds, which might not have survived otherwise, are alive and well, and a sub-standard breeder is out of the business forever. So why is Carey so upset?

(to read the full article, please click on the title)

Good question....  Why is Carey so upset?  Is it because it was never about the dogs at all for Grey2K?  It is about politics & power & hate.  It's sad how someone can be so full of hate and how easily he spreads that hate through the Carey Nation, minions wearing blinders.

Grey2K is a sham and it always has been.

Yours in Greyhounds....

The Great Grey2k Media Challenge

By Dennis McKeon

Lost in all the G2k hubbub over their attack on the National Greyhound Association’s recent handling of a neglect case, their subsequent rescue of 141 greyhounds, and the lifetime suspension from greyhound ownership and racing of the perpetrator, was this little tidbit:

The anti gambling organization, Stop Predatory Gambling, among others, has succeeded in having the previously resolved issue of whether or not local communities within Massachusetts should be allowed to decide whether or not they host a casino within their borders, overturned by Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling. Casino approval will now be decided by statewide ballot.
It might come as a surprise to some of us that an activist group like Grey2k, which has accepted millions in donations under the onus of “helping the greyhounds”, would be interested at all in the fate of Massachusetts’ would-be casinos.
That is, perhaps, until one discovers that the Executive Director of Grey2k also sits on the board of Stop Predatory Gambling, an activist organization dedicated to the elimination of state-sanctioned gambling and gaming.
Wikipedia has this to say about the Stop Predatory Gambling:
”The organization that would become Stop Predatory Gambling began forming in the early 1990s as state and community leaders challenged efforts to bring commercial gambling into their communities. Tom Grey, a Rockford, Illinois resident who fought against a proposed casino in his community, emerged as a leader for the movement representing a diverse national coalition of groups and individuals.”
Tom Grey also happens to sit on the Board of Grey2k.
Grey2k’s spokespersons have steadfastly maintained that the group is unengaged and neutral on the greater issue of gambling, and the formerly local issues of casino sanction. The Massachusetts Supreme Court docket, however, lists Stop Predatory Gambling as a complainant in this most recent overturning of the Attorney General’s previous ruling.
The Brockton Enterprise, in November of 2013, reported the following:
”Carey Theil, executive director of GREY2K USA, said although his organization does not have an official position on casino gambling in general, the nonprofit is backing the Repeal the Casino Deal coalition now working to add a ballot question to the November 2014 election that would repeal the law legalizing three casinos and one slot casino in Massachusetts.”
They did not mention that Theil also sits on the Board of Stop Predatory Gambling, however.
Recently, in Florida, the issue of “decoupling” took center stage. The decoupling question centers on whether casino-racetracks, whose management agreed to allocate a percentage of their casino profits to the purses that the greyhounds compete for, should be allowed to walk away from that agreement, which was intrinsic to their pari-mutuel license, which was intrinsic to their fast-tracking into casino license/operation, bypassing the normal bidding and licensing processes.
Grey2k were unabashed supporters of the Florida “decoupling” movement and proposed decoupling legislation. That, strangely enough, placed them in lock-step support with the Casino racetrack operations there, while at the very same time they were working with the Repeal the Casino coalition in Massachusetts.
Both Grey2k and Stop Predatory Gambling encourage and accept donations from the public to support their agenda and activities, and both have been granted tax-exempt status.
The decoupling movement gained traction with the curiously timed release of a report of what appeared to be an excessive number of racing related fatalities over a seven-month period at Florida’s greyhound tracks.
Subsequent analysis of the extremely nebulous reports, seemed to show that only about a little more than half of the fatalities documented were unquestionably attributable to racing, and not simply instances of normal, premature or accidental mortality, or were unexplained sufficiently.
The number of fatalities, nevertheless, was unprecedented, and unacceptable to the Florida Greyhound Association (of greyhound breeders, owners and kennel operators) who smelled a rank conflict of interest.
The negative publicity this report generated in the various mainstream and social media, seemed to be precisely what the casino-tracks needed to drive home their decoupling money grab, synchronized as it was to the upcoming legislative hearings and vote on the decoupling question.
Since it is the job of the casino/racetrack management to maintain a safe and hazard free racing surface for the greyhounds, the Florida Greyhound Association decided that the tracks perhaps needed some motivation to take care of their responsibilities in a more competent and holistic fashion.
To eliminate any possibility that the casino-racetracks were slacking in their commitment to proper racetrack maintenance and preparation, and perhaps deliberately cultivating a racing environment guaranteed to produce an excessive number of injuries to the greyhounds, and then reaping that attendant, helpful-to-their-cause, negative publicity which injuries to greyhounds generate, the Florida Greyhound Association proposed what came to known as the Smith Amendment.
This legislation would have mandated that all Florida’s racetrack lures be safeguarded against electric shock and concussion hazards, and would have held each racetrack’s management to a stipulated standard of racetrack surface maintenance and preparation.
Oddly enough, it was Senator Maria Sachs, who has worked hand in hand with Grey2k on the decoupling issue, as well as the humane controversies surrounding greyhound racing, who killed discussion on the Smith Amendment, essentially throwing this much-needed and greyhound-beneficial legislation on the trash heap, where the decoupling legislation also ended up.
Grey2k, the self-proclaimed “greyhound protection group” inexplicably failed to raise its voice in support of the Smith Amendment, which not only would have prevented future injuries to racing greyhounds, but could have served as a model of legislation for other states where greyhound racing is conducted.
Meanwhile, they were eagerly awaiting the decision of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, which, it turns out, will delay casino development in the commonwealth, if not entirely prohibit it, pending the whim of the electorate, who may or may not be anywhere near a proposed casino.
Perhaps the most inscrutable and shameful episode in this whole, tiresome scenario, is that the mainstream media, who are only too happy to trumpet every accusation Grey2k levels at greyhound racing professionals, seem oblivious to this flagrant lack of ethics and glaring conflict of interests.
Grey2k, meanwhile, right under the nose of the “bloodhound” media, double-dips with impunity. Supporting the casino-track operators in Florida, and working against them through proxy in Massachusetts, and accepting donations in either case, to “help us help the greyhounds”.
Then, when they had a chance to support legislation that would have proven a great benefit to all of Florida’s greyhounds, they did nothing.
Nothing, that is, other than to watch and listen as their political cohort dismissed the Smith Amendment as being unnecessary, while testifying before the legislature that the racetracks in Florida were well-managed and safe.
This, after years of defaming greyhound racing and the people who participate in it as being cruel, abusive and inhumane, essentially because of the supposed risk of injury to the greyhounds on those very racetracks---while accepting millions in donations from a public who believes they are investing in actual greyhound welfare provision, something Grey2k has never provided, and inexplicably failed to support, in this instance.
This arrogant nose-thumbing at their supporters, as well as their media sycophants, in a perfect world, would likely be interpreted by any industrious and ethical investigative reporter, as a spit-in-your-eye challenge.
It’s truly become a theater of the absurd.
Hopefully, someone, somewhere in the mainstream media has taken notice.

Follow the Money....

"Follow the money"....  It's a phrase we're hearing more & more in today's society as more & more people are being duped by scams, graft, and fraud. The first time I remember hearing it was in the 1976 movie, All the President's Men, and it was said in a conversation between "Deep Throat" and Bob Woodward with regards to the Watergate scandal. It seems that this particular phrase has ALWAYS been associated, since then, with corruption.  It serves as a good reminder that if money is involved, chances are if you "follow the money trail" it will lead you, like the trail of bread crumbs in Hansel & Gretel,  to the root source, the motivation behind an action, and a look at who stood to profit.

For those who are thinking about donating to Grey2K USA and for those who donated already to that lobbying group, there are links in this post that you really should examine. Grey2K touts itself as helping racing greyhounds when, in fact, it appears by these financial reports that they are only helping themselves.

The first link it to a spread sheet that shows the donation dollars breakdown in a clear & easy format.

G2K Financial Summary-Detail REV2014.pdf

This chart and the pie chart below show that over an 8 year time period, 2004 - 2012, Grey2K USA took in more than $3.4 MILLION dollars!  That's a lot of money that would have been much better sent to a greyhound adoption group of your choice or some real charity. Remember, Grey2K is not a charity, it is a LOBBYING group.

G2K Financial Pie Chart 2004-2012.pdf

So, how much of that $3.4 MIILLION dollars actually went to helping dogs?  Less than 2%.  Yes, I did not stutter...  ONLY $43,291 (1.3%) went to actually helping retired racing greyhounds.  That is pathetic!

If you "follow the money", you will see that the greatest bulk of those hard earned dollars, nearly 28%, was spent on the salaries of Christine Dorchak & Carey Theil.  Dorchak & Theil averaged more than $100,000 in salary on a yearly basis, while donations to the dogs averaged $481 during the same time period.  So much for helping the dogs.  Looks to me like they are only helping themselves and that's not including the trips they took to some pretty far corners of the globe: Ireland, England, Macau...  Must be nice.

The Grey2K scam is on a par with that of the Humane Society of the US (HSUS). High  executive salaries, little in actual help for the animals, and a lot of misleading propaganda.

Marx and Goebbels would be proud.

Boston Attack

The writers of this blog are praying for Boston and her people, visitors, etc.  May God bless Boston and keep her safe.

Also, as much as we detest Grey2K and its founders, Christine Dorchak & Carey Theil, Christine has run in the Boston Marathon in the past.  We sincerely hope that they are safe & sound.  We do not wish them any harm and we'd hate to hear that they were injured.

Greyhound Friends of Hopkinton.... Louise Coleman.... Grey2K Connection... Killing Greyhounds

Something disturbing has just come to my attention - it's one of those things where I ask "Should I involve myself?"... after sleeping over it I've come to this conclusion; Damn right I should.

First, I'd like to point out that I have a sincere and deep respect for the vast majority of folks in the Greyhound Adoption Community; my involvement with greyhounds began with adoption dogs. Without them and their tireless work to help our retired racers into loving homes, our lives as breeders and trainers would be near impossible. So, this isn't about my bashing anyone in the adoption world - this is about one single, solitary woman and group.

I found out last night that UMR High Roller (5 y/o) and Primco Yogi (7 y/o) were recently put to sleep. Both boys were healthy and vibrant. Their problem? They were taking up crate space their 'adoption group' needed to accept new, more "adoptable" dogs. Apparently, these boys had outstayed their welcome and because of this, their lives were snuffed out.  They were destroyed.

UMR High Roller

The anti-racing group, Greyhound Friends of Hopkinton, MA, which is run by Louise Coleman, destroyed them.

I don't care as to what this "woman" might have done to help greyhounds in the past when racing was alive in the northeast.

For years, greyhound racing professionals were demonized for humanely euthanizing older greyhounds to make room for younger ones - adoption signified a rethinking of that mindset and the mainstreaming of the breed. Apparently, Louise Coleman has a lot in common with those people who were often the object of her scorn and condemnation years ago. To do what she has resorted to is abhorrent and unacceptable - despicable and deplorable.

I urge EVERY single owner of a racing greyhound to refuse to send this group another dog. If you have one in her groups custody right now, I strongly urge you to do whatever you can to get that dog moved to a reputable group. There are plenty of groups out there now who would love to help place your dogs into a loving home and not the ground.

R.I.P. High Roller...   R.I.P. Yogi.

ADDENDUM

In Carey Theil's blog post dated Wednesday, April 4, he states,
"On Monday, we hosted a small party at the GREY2K USA office to celebrate the birthday of my adopted greyhound Zoe. Although this was a joyful occasion, it does remind me now of all the family birthday parties Bubbles Sidekick will never have."
Carey, where is the concern for the birthdays that the 5 years old, healthy greyhound, UMR High Roller will never have?

Where is the concern for the birthdays that the 7 yr old, healthy greyhound, Primco Yogi will never have?

These healthy dogs that were destroyed by an anti-racing rescue group aren't even given a passing mention in your blog.  WHY?  Is it because they were destroyed by an anti-racing group that Grey2K has referred to as a "partner"?

Does it matter to Grey2K that this 'rescue' group has assets in excess of $1 million dollars and they are making money off the dogs?

Does it matter to Grey2K that they are destroying healthy dogs that are not making money for them, dogs that are taking up valuable kennel space?  Space which could be occupied by a more profitable, more easily sold greyhound.

You have complained about responsible owners humanely euthanizing dogs that have suffered traumatic injuries, yet you do not say a word about a "rescue" group destroying HEALTHY dogs because they cannot find them homes.

The hypocrisy of the anti-racing crowd doesn't have any bounds!  Do don't as we do; do as we say!

Update on Grey2K Trip to England

Ah yes... Several days back, in the post, Last of the Board Duties, I commented about Mr & Mrs Grey2K's working vacationtrip to England being timed to coincide with the "1000 Greyhounds" event.

I am happy to report that it was confirmed back on Sept 4 that Grey2K USA, in the form of President Christine Dorchak and her husband, Executive Director Carey Theil, did, in fact, put in an appearance at the "1000 Greyhounds (greyhoundworldrecord.com) event, to hand out badges (buttons) to participants!

You know, an airline ticket to London is around $1k... I wonder how much this trip is costing?

Curiosity got the best of me... So, I went on to a couple of discount travel sites including Expedia to get a guesstimate as to how much the trip may cost.  I found the cheapest total cost, per person, was to stay at a hostel. What's the difference between a hotel and a hostel?

Hotels are considered more luxurious than hostels and, therefore, more expensive. At a hotel one can have his own room and bathroom as well as maid service and other amenities. A person staying at a hotel will have his bags carried to his room, fresh towels delivered and his bed made up daily.

Hostels are generally used by younger travelers with less money to spare. Those visiting a hostel will most likely be required to share a room as well as bath and shower rooms. In the past, rooms were set up dormitory fashion, with communal showers. Nowadays, some hostels offer single rooms and bathrooms, while shared, might accommodate only one guest at a time.

Anyway....  Here is the info from Expedia as to the least expensive Airfare + Lodging  +Car package.

Somehow, I cannot envision the leadership of Grey2K, as dedicated to the welfare of greyhounds that they are, staying in a hostel, even if they are going to be touring the country. But, I'll give them the benefit of a doubt...

Even so, this is a fine use of those donations "for the dogs"....  NOT!

Of course, this is all supposition as we have no idea as to where they stayed or how their reservations were made, but you can see that this trip to England was not cheap.  It was, at a minimum, airfare alone was about $2000 for airfare alone.   What about meals?  We have no idea as to how much the final cost will be?

That $2000 would go a long way to helping a lot of greyhounds find homes, if it had been donated to an actual adoption group rather than lobbyists, who are making a living off of the dogs...  who are 'exploiting' the dogs (to use their own words) to achieve a political goal.

So, how much do you want to bet that Grey2K will have a donate comment on all their buttons, literature and swag they hand out?  It's called "Branding".  And, as long as they don't take pennies on site, then how the donations come in are fair game.  My guess is that they are not going to be political, lobby or whatever over there. They are getting tours of greyhound racing facilities and attending a novelty ENTERTAINMENT EVENT ... which is what setting a Guinness world book record really is.  All on the backs of the dogs they supposedly support. While campaigning for more money to pay for their pleasure trips.

How much do you want to bet that they are going to use the trip to scrounge up more donations back here in the States?  After all....  they will probably next want to visit Macau...  to shut down greyhound racing there.

Concerned about Greyhound Welfare – Really?

Grey2K USA puts out more misinformation regarding greyhounds & greyhound racing.
By Dick Ciampa

Over the years Grey2K has put out much misinformation about greyhounds. They have campaigned with simple messages, repeated over and over, to paint a picture of abuse and mistreatment calculated to make caring, trusting people believe theirs is the whole and true story.

Grey2K has, for example, taken an extreme and isolated case like Ronnie Williams and portrayed it as the norm in order to reinforce their carefully crafted fundraising objectives.

Stepping back for a moment, consider the consequences if every kennel treated their dogs like that. Would there be any dogs left to race? Would there be any dogs to adopt?

Many people have adopted greyhounds to “rescue” them from the conditions described by Grey2K, conditions alleged to include routine abuse, poor diet, and tens of thousands of dogs killed each year.  And yet, just about everyone who adopts a greyhound tells you how wonderful they are, and how great their disposition is.

Remarkable isn’t it, how abused and mistreated hounds change in the blink of an eye into tail-wagging, happy, loving pets. The real explanation is that their wonderful dispositions are the result of their upbringing. They are great and loving pets because of the care they received from the farm to the kennels.

Consider for a moment the amount of rehabilitation needed by abused dogs. It is simply not credible that dogs said to have left the track abused and mistreated could be transformed overnight.

Consider also that Grey2K doesn’t turn the kennels into animal control agencies in spite of all the abuse they claim to have observed. Wouldn’t that be the immediate reaction of most people?

As to the much-maligned greyhound diet, since the beginning of racing greyhounds have received food that they thrive on, typically raw ground beef (4D meat) mixed with many other health-promoting ingredients. Grey2K likes to make 4D meat sound bad by saying it is marked “Not for Human Consumption” and they are right. It isn’t for human consumption. This overlooks one basic, obvious fact: greyhounds are not human, and time has proven that it is perfectly fit and safe for their consumption.

When has a greyhound died from consuming this meat? That information is nowhere to be found in Grey2K campaign literature. Could that be because it has never happened?

Grey2K and allied organizations like GPL, PETA and ALF claim, variously, that 10, 15, 20 thousand greyhounds are killed every year. That is a very interesting claim considering the facts:
In 2011, 11,759 pups were born
In 2010, there were 12,801
In 2009, there were 15,584
In 2008, there were 20,365
In 2007, there were 20,227
Greyhound racing breeders are required to report every pup born in the litter including stillborn pups. Some of the surviving pups may, contrary to Grey2K claims, be lost before 3 months of age - the runt doesn’t make it, the mother accidentally smothers one, some get sick and die, it happens to every species and greyhounds are no exception.  Even ignoring those details, based on the number of deaths claimed by Grey2K, how can there be any greyhounds left?

Grey2K loves to take credit for things they didn’t do. They like to point out that when they started there were over 50 tracks and now only are 23 left, implying they were responsible for all those closures. They then ask for donations to help close the remaining tracks.

The truth is, every track outside of Massachusetts closed for reasons that had nothing to do with Grey2K. The economy closed some. The Kansas tracks closed because they didn’t like their cut of the slot money. If they get a better percentage of the slot money they will re-open.

Victoryland’s owner closed the track when he was accused of wrongdoing unrelated to greyhound racing. He has since been found not guilty and has plans to re-open.

Grey2K says greyhound racing is legal in 7 states; however, it is, in fact, legal in 49 states. In some states wagering on greyhounds is illegal, but races can still be run in those states and they can simulcast their signal if they want to.

Grey2K claims to be all about the dogs, but they make no attempt to ban non-betting greyhound races. They have no concern about lure coursing or flyball, yet greyhounds and other breeds get hurt in those sports too.

One can only conclude that while Grey2K isn’t billed as anti-gambling their board members are. Carey Theil, board member and co-founder of Grey2K, sits on the board of directors of the anti-gambling group Stop Predatory Gambling.

Rev. Tom Gray, board member of Grey2K, is Field Director and spokesperson for Stop Predatory Gambling.

The great illusionist David Copperfield makes you think he can walk through The Great Wall of China.   David Copperfield has nothing on Grey2K.
